1. Lynyrd Skynyrd, “Free Chook” (From [Pronounced ‘Lĕh-‘nérd ‘Skin-‘nérd], 1973)

Written as an ode to freedom, then tailored as an eulogy for Duane Allman, Lynyrd Skynyrd’s “Free Chook” has taken on mythic proportions since its debut on the Southern rock legends’ 1973 debut. In its unique kind, the tune lasts over 9 minutes; as a live performance finale and spotlight, “Free Chook” has been prolonged to greater than quarter-hour onstage. There is no shock to its reputation and longevity: “Free Chook,” it doesn’t matter what kind it takes, is a definitive American tune from one of many definitive American bands.
